Technical Background

Technology:

Midaz lasers are based on specially designed slab gain modules used in a side-pumped Bounce Amplifier Geometry. Choice of gain medium, slab design and diode-pump delivery allows optimum use of pump radiation leading to very high efficiency operation. Careful cavity design developed over many years of experience of this technology allows us to achieve excellent beam quality. Our combination of innovative amplifier and cavity designs allow us to control the thermal issues that limit competing DPSS laser technologies. The result is that we can maintain high beam quality even at extraordinarily high average powers. Other unique features of Bounce Amplifier Geometry include:

  • Low cost, scalable diode delivery
  • Scalable output power
  • Ultra high gain capability (10 4 -  10 6 )
  • Ultra high optical-to-optical efficiency (up to 70%)
  • High peak powers (>100kW)

Comparison to Fibre Lasers : Midaz offers the high gain, high efficiency and high average power levels normally associated with fibre lasers. However, by operating in a robust bulk DPSS format Midaz systems surpass fibre lasers in high peak power pulsed capability. In the small core sizes of fiber lasers, the peak power must be kept low to prevent catastrophic damage as well as onset of detrimental optical nonlinearities. By contrast, Midaz slab structure can be configured for high peak power one or two orders of magnitude higher than fibre laser power limits. As well as the enhanced ablative cutting and marking potential of high peak power and short pulses, high peak power allows us to provide extremely efficient high power conversion options in the visible and UV.
